AI（人工知能）のディープラーニングが劇的に進化しつつあり、さらにAIが発達し、人間の知性を超える技術的特異点＝シンギュラリティが来ると予測されている。このような予想がある中、現在も、AIの開発、応用は多くの機関で精力的に行われているが、そうした技術の進展が人間社会にどのような影響を与え、人間をより豊かなものにするためにはどのような法制度や社会的制度を構築すべきなのかについての研究が非常に遅れている状況にある。本研究所では、このような状況を改善すべく、AI時代の諸問題を人文・社会科学の領域から検討する。

私は、シンギュラリティ研究所所長として、この度の研究所開設には大きな期待を抱いています。AI、ディープラーニング、ソーシャルメディアなどが現在社会に大きな影響を与えているいま、さまざまなことが便利になり、人と人との繋がりも変わってきています。また、ロボットなども身近になり、生活も変化しています。 　しかしそもそもこのようなツールはどのように使い、どのような目的に使われるべきなのでしょうか？　現時点では、企業をはじめ、大学、政府などによって、日々開発が進み、技術が進化していますが、社会で必要となっているのはこういったツールの使い方や意味を考えることではないでしょうか。当研究所では、技術の進化にともなって起こってくる、社会に影響を与えるさまざまな問題を研究していきます。 　シンギュラリティとはAIが人間を超える技術的特異点と言われていますが、人間を超えたらどのように動くのかという仕様は現時点でのAIの仕様によって決められています。大人の基本的性格が子どものときに決められるように、自立したAIがなにをするかは現在の「成長期」のAIによって決められていくのです。 　私たちが期待する未来を実現するには、我々がどのような社会を求めているのかを改めて確認し、AIが持つ「倫理」を検証していく必要があるのではないでしょうか。 　当研究所では、倫理と平等など多様な価値観をもとに、人間にとってあるべき社会とはなにかを研究し、人間が希望を持って生きられる社会、より創造的に活動できる社会とはなにかをさまざまな視点から研究していく予定です。 　私は、研究所の今後のイベントや活動を、このように公表できることに大きな喜びを感じます。 みなさまも私たちと一緒に来たるべき未来を考えていきませんか。みなさまのご参加を強く期待しております。

As president of the Singularity Research Institute, I have great expectations for the opening of this laboratory. At this moment computational tools such as AI, deep learning and social media have substantial influence on society: various things have become convenient, and the connection between people and people is changing. Robots and automation are already making significant differences in how we live. But how should one use such tools and with what kind of purpose should they be used in the first place? At present, technologies are evolving day by day due to rapid development by companies, universities, and governments, but not in a way that seems deeply thought through as far as their social impact. One major aim of our institute is to study various problems that affect society which accompany the evolution of technology. The singularity can be defined technically as the singular point at which AI exceeds human beings, but how this change will occur and what precisely it means to exceed the human is determined by the specifications of AI at the present moment. Just as the basic personality of an adult is decided in childhood, the actions and nature of self-aware AI will be decided by the AI of the current "growth period". In order to realize the future that we expect, we need to reconfirm what kind of society we are looking for and to consider closely ethical issues related to AI and the ethics of AI itself. In our institute, based on diverse values such as ethics and equality, we hope to help achieve an AI developed for human beings as human beings, and deployed in a society where people can live with hope in a way consonant with furthering their creativity and happiness. I feel great pleasure and excitement in the announcement of the upcoming events and activities of the laboratory. We hope that many people will join us, including you, the reader.
